Integration
with Microsoft SMS
Microsoft Systems Management Server is a system management framework that is able to perform an inventory of the HW and SW. In addition to standard information that the BIOS provides to MS SMS when requested, Olivetti supplies additional MIF files that obtain certain information that MS SMS does not with its BIOS enquiries. This information is retrieved by a windows application named DMISCAN via the DMI BIOS and mainly concerns the correct and unique identification of a PC.
DMISCAN extracts information from the BIOS, structures it, and stores it in MIF format.
The application is supplied in three different versions:
- 16 bit version for the Windows 95 environment
- 32 bit version for the Windows NT environment (ver. 3.51 or later)
- 16 bit version for the Windows 3.1 environment
SNMP support allows the local desktop management environment to be integrated in an SNMP monitoring environment, such as the Olivetti Server View solution.
SNMP permits the Management Station to ask a generic client PC for a series of data which are placed at the disposal of the DMI environment. The client PC can also send a series of SNMP Traps on receiving DMI events.
To this end the DMI Service Layer is installed with LANDesk Client Manager through which the SNMP Management Station can request information.
The SNMP support package is furnished with four Management Information Base files which contain information about their related components as well as Trap definitions. The components they describe in this case are the PC system, the Video, the Audio Device and the PCs resilience components. The files also contain definitions of SNMP supported Traps. A Trap is a predefined DMI event which informs the Management Station that an error has occured on a Client.
