Cubix PowerSMP System

The PowerSMP System is a Cubix ERS-FT II System with a different backplane configuration.

Backplane

The key to flexibility in Cubix Systems is the backplane. It is installed in the bottom of the system, and determines how many computers can be installed, and what bus or bus's are supported (ISA, or PCI).

The PowerSMP System comes in the following backplane configurations.

The PowerSMP Series 4000 backplane provides as many as eleven expansion slots (three PCI and eight ISA) for a single dual SMP board set. Alternatively, some or all of the four ISA slot pairs can be cofigured to support one to four BC Series plug-in computerss. This is possible because of Cubix's unique shunting method which allows pairs of ISA slots to be linked together.

The PowerSMP Series 5000 backplane provides two dual SMP DP 6200 slot groups and a single ISA BC Series slot group. Each dual SMP group provides two PCI expansion slots and a shared PCI/ISA expansion slot. The ISA group provides a single ISA expansion slot.

Backplane Configurations

To increase the number of available configurations, the system backplane can be reconfigured for a different number of groups, and slots per group. This is done by using shunt slots and shunt boards.

Each group of slots is separated by a brown connector called a shunt slot.

For example, if a shunt board is installed between group 1 and group 2 on the PowerSMP Series 4000 backplane:
