Frequently Asked Questions


Q01: How do I install the IES module? 


A01: Like the video/keyboard/mouse cable, the data highway is daisy-chained between subsystems. Each IES connected to the same Cubix data highway must be assigned a unique data highway address. In ERS II Subsystems, the IES is a stand alone module installed in a slot of the backplane. The IES address is configured with two rotary switches on the module. If the IES is the last module in the daisy chain, set switch 2 of the two-position dip switch on the end bracket to the on position (pointing down). Be sure to remove the jumper from the mux in position 26.


Q02: How do I determine the backplane configuration?


A02: The backplane configuration determines the number of slots that are included in each group. All slots in a passive backplane are interconnected with traces, creating a bus. If these traces are broken between slots, the backplane can be separated into smaller independent backplanes or groups. Groups are connected by inserting a "shunt". A shunt is a small board (approx. 6" x 3/4") that is installed between each group of ISA slots. When installed the shunt board joins the groups together.


Q03: How do I connect multiple drawers?


A03: Multiple ERS II Subsystems installed in a Cubix System 1010 cabinet can be connected together in a daisy-chained fashion allowing single keyboard, video and mouse devices to be shared among ERS II Subsystems. To multiplex between Subsystems, connect a 25-conductor DB-25 male to DB-25 male cable to the 25-pin connector labeled Video/KB/Mouse on the Video/keyboard/mouse interface module. Connect the other end of the cable to the 25-pin connector labeled Video Out on the rear panel of the Subsystem on the end of the daisy-chain.


Q04: How should my option switches be set?


A04: In the ERS II the option switch is a four position switch located on the top of the Multiplexor behind the fans. Switches are numbered one to four from left to right when viewed from the front of the subsystem. If the switch corresponding to an option is OFF the option is enabled; if the switch is ON, the option is disabled. A switch is OFF (option enabled) when it is pointing up> A switch is ON (option disabled) when it is pointing toward the front of the subsystem.

IF this option is enabled and the console is locked, all of the muxed devices except for the monitor are disabled. The monitor remains functional on the channel that was selected a the time the lock occurred.

If this option is enabled and the console is locked, the only muxed device that will be disabled is the floppy disk drive. The monitor, keyboard, and the mouse will continue to function on the selected channel.

If this option is enabled and either the console is locked or the subsystem is disabled, the floppy drive will be connected to the first mux channel, regardless of the BC Group push-button selection.

Subsystems may be connected by daisy chaining them via the Video In and Video Out connectors on the rear panel of the subsystems. If the Master Console Keylock option is enabled , the subsystem will functions as a "master console."


Q05: Why do I lose my mouse when I mux between groups?


A05: Each time a group is selected the mouse is reset. Give the mouse a couple of seconds to reset before proceeding. Avoid moving the mouse when switching between groups. Verify that the VHOTFIX.386 device driver is installed in the Windows SYSTEM.ini file for Windows 3.11. The mouse interrupt (IRQ 12) must be enabled in the hardware configuration (switch setting on the processor). Also check that the "Mouse Support Option" in the Advanced CMOS Setup section of the BIOS setup Utilities is "Enabled." Use a Logitech PS/2 type mouse. For Dos & Windows 3.11 a mouse driver must be loaded first in DOS.
