Technical Information & Problems

The CDD2600 is a 2X write, 6X read CD-recorder. It is a very reliable apparate and it wonīt make problems if you know which limitations it has, and what you have to do to avoid possible problems. The CDD2600 is the ideal tool for publishing large amounts of information in compact form on CD, especially the incremental packet writing function makes this apparate attractive to all people that have to backup , archieve or interchange data. If you are only looking for a recorder for making audio CDs (CD-DA), than you should choose another drive. The problem section below, will explain the problems you can find when burning CD-DA.

Problems & Limitations:

  • Digital audio extraction (DAE) may probably not work correctly at higher than 2Xspeed on the CDD2600.
  • It also suffers from the block offset problem. This means: The CDD2600 does not correctly extract digital audio if the pregap of the first track isnīt exactly two seconds. A bug in the firmware causes the drive to start extracting slightly past the start of the track, and stop extracting slightly past the end. This can result in an audible glitch if the music starts at the exact start of the track, and can cause the drive to fail with an error when extracting the last track on the CD.
  • As the CDD2600 has no Flash Bios, if a software product needs a Bios version , the CDD2600 has to be sent to a Philips service centre. This will cost you time and money.
  • The CDD2600 has overheating problems. You will have to spend money for an extra cooling fan if you want to avoid problems and you want your CDD2600 to work correctly.
  • Though the CDD2600 is a 6Xspeed reading drive, it will slow down to 2Xspeed when reading disk that have been written incrementally (UDF) and are not finaliced. When using packet writing software you will have in most cases a 2Xspeed reading/writing apparate.
  • Philips donīt offer any drivers for the CDD2600. It is plug&play compatible with Windows95/NT. To use it with DOS/Linux/Mac you need third party drivers.
  • Sometimes the laserhead looses the calibration. I think this has to do with the overheating problem. It seems that Philips has not used a temperature resistant lubricant. So the calibration problem is in reality a lubrication problem. The laserlens can not be positioned fast and accurate enough. You can repair this problem with the following fix instructions.
  • The Philips has often problems reading pressed CDs with less than 30 MB data on them. This seems to be an ISO compatibility problem, and it only happens with pressed CDs. This problem only occcurs with the older CDD2600 units.
  • The CDD2600 does not support overburning. This means the recorder is not able to burn more on a CD-R than the CD-R reports it can handle. So, if you want to burn more than 74 minutes to a CD-R, you have to use 80 minutes media.
  • The CDD2600 does not support CD-Text.
  • The CDD2600 is not compatible with Windows2000. Windows2000 has a new service called  "Logical Disk manager" which is timing out with the CDD2600. You can wait up to 10 minutes to start the explorer!! If you disconnect/ turn off the CDD2600, everything works fine :-(
  • ERROR code list:
There can also be a large number of errors with their own codes. Look at the error code list of the CDD2600.

Important:

Many people that are having problems with the CDD2600 while they are burning, donīt know if there are doing something wrong, or if the recorder is broken and not working correctly. To all people having this problem: I remember you that the CDD2600 has an "Auto selftest". This is how it works:

Execution:
  • Selftest will be activated by pushing and holding OPEN/CLOSE button for one complete Open/Close cycle of the tray
  • At Host command: Send diagnostics
Visible effects:
  • At total selftest start: Green, orange and red will respectively light up for about 200 msec. This will be repeated 3 times.
  • At start of each individual test: The two LEDS will go on for 0.5 sec. and then the test starts.
  • During the test: The two LEDS remain on.
  • At the end of an individual test: if the test was unsuccesfull, the red error led will go on for 1 sec. If the test was succesfull the green led will go on.
  • At the end of the selftest: During 5 seconds, the orange and the green led will flash if the whole test was OK. In case of an error, the orange and the red light will flash during 5 seconds.
Individual tests:
  • Test internal processor RAM
  • Test external SRAM
  • Test EPROM
  • Test DSP interface
  • Test DRAM
  • Test SCSI interface
  • Test CDB2 interface
  • Test datapath
  • Test SRAM CDB2
