Client Configuration

WorldDesk includes a GUI-based program that enables the system administrator to preconfigure client diskettes. The WorldDesk preconfiguration utility allows the administrator to select which setup questions he wants answered by the user verses those he wants answered automatically. None, some, or all questions may be preconfigured. Use of the preconfiguration utility is optional; however, Cubix recommends using this utility to simplify installation for those responsible for client setup. If this facility is not used, the user will be prompted for the appropriate response at each question. For instructions on how to use this utility, turn to the "How to Preconfigure Client Setup."

Preparing the Client User for Successful Installation

Before asking the user to configure his or her client workstation, please read the client quick start guides that came with the WorldDesk package. This will help you determine the level of support required by each user. At a minimum, each user will require the information requested in the "DOS Clients," "Windows 3.1x Clients," and "Windows 95 Clients" sections.

DOS Clients

  1. A preconfigured client setup diskette or the appropriate configuration value for each screen displayed during the setup process.
  2. The drive and directory to which the WorldDesk client software is to be installed. Even if the client setup is preconfigured, the user will need this information.
  3. The information required to access and log onto the WorldDesk Server. For example, username/password combinations, security codes, DES challenge/response instructions, etc.
  4. Normal startup procedures - for example, how to connect to WorldDesk Server, start a session and initiate the required applications and services, etc.
  5. Normal shutdown procedures - for example, how to close and exit applications and services, terminate sessions, and exit the communications software, etc.
  6. Instructions on how to load and configure the communications software for access to the NASI and Interrupt 14 redirectors. If the communications software does not support these interfaces, the dial-out-client cannot call a shared modem.

A note regarding the communications software . . .

The communications software may be a terminal emulator (such as ProComm network version), a remote control software package (such as Symantec PCAnywhere), or other network-aware program.

Windows 3.1x Clients

  1. A preconfigured client setup diskette or the appropriate configuration value for each screen displayed during the setup process.
  2. The drive and directory to which the WorldDesk client software is to be installed. Even if the client setup is preconfigured, the user will need this information.
  3. If installing Windows for Workgroups Network Support and planning to connect to a Novell NetWare file server, supply the Novell NetWare Network version.
  4. The information required to access and log onto the WorldDesk Server. For example, username/password combinations, DES challenge/response instructions, etc.
  5. Normal startup procedures - for example, how to connect to WorldDesk Server, start a session and initiate the required applications and services, etc.
  6. Normal shutdown procedures - for example, how to close and exit applications and services, terminate sessions, and exit the communications software, etc.
  7. The following information must be provided for verification of the Dial-out Client installation.

a. Any port, modem, or group of modems to which the user should redirect.

b. Instructions on how to start and configure the client workstation’s communications software for redirection to the appropriate port, modem, or group of modems. If any other communications parameters need to be configured, please supply those values and instructions also.

Windows 95 Clients

  1. A preconfigured client setup diskette or the appropriate configuration value for each screen displayed during the setup process.
  2. If networking support has not already been installed on the client’s workstation, provide a list of clients and protocols required.
  3. The drive and directory to which the WorldDesk client software is to be installed. Even if the client setup is preconfigured, the user will need this information.

Windows NT Clients

  1. A preconfigured client setup diskette or the appropriate during the setup process.
  2. If networking support has not already been installed on the client’s workstation, provide a list of clients and protocols required.
  3. The drive and directory to which the WorldDesk client software is to be installed. Even if the client setup is preconfigured, the user will need this information.

How to Preconfigure Client Setup

  1. To start the preconfiguration utility, double-click the "WorldDesk Setup Preconfiguration" icon. This utility was installed with the WorldDesk Manager.

A tabbed GUI appears. Each of the questions may be either left in the default state of "Ask user" or an answer to the question may be preconfigured. Some options apply only to certain operating systems. Also, choosing to preconfigure certain elements to be installed causes other tabs to appear. For example, when you choose to install Applink, the tabs "Applink Icons" and "Applink Clusters" appear. Whenever necessary, press F1 for online help.

  1. After the preconfiguration process is complete, insert a WorldDesk client setup diskette (diskette #1 when multiple client diskettes are provided) into floppy drive A: on the workstation.

When the ‘Save to A:’ button is clicked, the preconfiguration data is saved to the floppy. Multiple diskettes can be created as required by inserting diskettes and clicking the ‘Save to A:’. Cubix suggests making a copy of the client diskette, and writing to the copy. Make sure the disk is not write-protected before saving.

You may read an existing preconfiguration file in order to make changes using the ‘Load from A:’ button. Be sure to click the ‘Save’ button when you are finished making changes. You may revert to the default (ask user all questions) configuration using the provided "defaults" button. Keep in mind that the "defaults" button resets all fields on the current page only.

It is important to note that the same preconfiguration facility is used for all client operating systems supported by WorldDesk. All options are saved in a single data file on the first installation diskette; program files are not directly modified by the preconfiguration program. The preconfiguration options are only used during the setup process; these options may be changed via the appropriate client configuration programs after installation is complete.

Preconfiguration facilities are not provided for WorldDesk Manager. It is assumed that WorldDesk console operators have sufficient technical background for successful installation of the WorldDesk management software.
