Appendix D
Configuration Changes
Reason for Change
Changing the Configuration
. To change the number of SCSI drives assigned to each SCSI bus
. To change the type of drive (half-height or third-height)
CAUTION!
Do not attempt to change the SafeStor\FT configuration while the unit is in operation.
Note: Detailed instructions for performing many of the steps listed below are included in Chapter 4 - Component Installation.
1. Determine the desired SCSI bus configuration. Remember the following guidelines:
2. Determine what changes to the existing configuration are required. Examine the current configuration specified on the configuration sheet attached to the rear of the front panel. If the configuration sheet has not been maintained, the configuration may be determined by examining the SCSI bus LEDs on the backplane. Refer to Figure D-1 to locate the LEDs, and Table D - 1 for LED interpretation.
Table D-1 SCSI Bus LED Definitions Amber A Terminator board is installed in the shunt slot. Green A shunt board is installed in the shunt slot (joining SCSI Bus segments). * Green & Amber A terminator board is installed backward in the shunt slot. None The shunt slot is empty. * This is an error condition that must be resolved before continuing with the system configuration. Refer to Chapter 4 - Component Installation for shunt and terminator board installation instructions. Do not attempt to remove or install shunt or terminator boards while the SafeStor\FT is in operation.
3. Verify that a sufficient quantity of shunt boards and terminator boards are available to achieve the desired configuration. Acquire any needed boards from Cubix Corporation before proceeding with the configuration.
4. Verify that sufficient SCSI cables and connectors are available to achieve the desired configuration. SCSI connector kits may be acquired from Cubix Corporation.
5. Power down the SafeStor\FT and disconnect the external cables from the rear of the SafeStor\FT. Warning! Do not continue with this procedure until both power cords are removed.
6. Reconfigure the backplane as required.
7. Modify the cable configuration as necessary.
8. Reassemble the unit, without replacing the front panel.
9. Apply power to the SafeStor\FT.
10. Verify the new bus configuration. Update the configuration sheet on the rear of the front panel to reflect the intended configuration changes. Compare the resulting sheet to the SCSI bus LEDs (refer to Figure D-1 and Table D - 1). If the LEDs do not match the configuration sheet, return to step 5.
11. Replace the front panel.
