Overview

There are two types of connections that may be established from a DOS based Viewer:

. Viewer in DOS controls a Host in DOS - The Viewer is taking control of a Host and running a DOS application.

. Viewer in DOS controls a Host in Windows 3.x - The Viewer is taking control of a Host and running a Windows 3.x session. Windows 95 support is not provided.

Ideally, if a DOS Viewer will control a Windows session running on the Host computer, the Viewer will have the same or better video resolution than the Host. However, if the Viewer resolution is less than the Host resolution, a scroll bar allows the lower resolution screen to recognize the higher resolution screen.

Getting Ready

Before establishing a connection, do the following:

. Install the Viewer as described in Chapter 2 - Installation.

. Connect the modem to the COM port. Be sure to use the type of modem and the COM port specified during the installation.

. Connect the modem to the phone system.

. If a mouse is to be used during the remote session, verify that the mouse driver is loaded in the CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT file. The mouse driver must be loaded before the ReachOut Viewer is invoked.

. Verify that the Host is functioning and awaiting a call.

Establishing a Connection

Help

At any time during the connection process, press <F1> for help on the function being performed.

Menu Access

Use one of the methods below to pull down a ReachOut Viewer menu:

. Press the highlighted letter in the menu name. For example, press L to access the Link menu.

. Use the left and right arrow keys to highlight the desired menu. If the menu is not displayed, press <Enter>.

. Use a mouse to position the cursor on the desired menu option and click the left mouse button.

Item Selection

Use one of the methods below to select an item from a menu:

. Press the highlighted letter in the menu name. For example, press P to select the Connect using Phone Book option from the Link menu.

. Use the up and down arrow keys to highlight the desired item. Press <Enter> to select the item.

. Use a mouse to position the cursor on the desired menu option and click the left mouse button.

To Establish a Connection

1. Change to the c:/reachout directory and type:

view

Press <Enter>.

2. Pull down the Preferences Menu and select the Edit Phone Book option.

3. Select the Add New Entry menu option. A screen requesting new host information is displayed.

4. Enter a Description of the Host.

5. Enter the Phone Number of the Host.

6. If the Host requires, enter a User Name (consult the system administrator to determine this information).

7. If the Host requires, enter a Password (consult the system administrator to determine this information).

8. If terminal emulation is desired, position the cursor on the Terminal Emulation option and press the space bar. A check mark appears to indicate that terminal emulation is enabled. Pressing the space bar again disables terminal emulation. Terminal emulation allows a Viewer to connect to a computer running terminal emulator software other than the ReachOut Host. Terminal emulation is typically used to dial into a bulletin board system (BBS), a UNIX computer, an information service such as CompuServe and Delphi, data terminals, and other computers running terminal emulation software.

9. Press <Alt>+X (hold down the <Alt> key and press X). The new entry is saved in the phone book.

10. Repeat steps 3 through 9 for each Host that the Viewer will need to dial into. Then press <Esc> to exit the phone book configuration.

! Phone book entries may be modified using the Edit Entry option. Entries may be deleted using the Delete Entry option.

11. From the Link Menu, select Once Connected. Choose the type of connection from the list of options below. Note that this choice only determines the mode in which the Viewer will initialize. Once the connection is established, the user may change modes on demand.

' Take Control of Host - control applications running on the Host from the Viewer (this is remote control).

' Exit to DOS - from the DOS prompt, access ReachOut's drive mapping or manually start remote control, chat, or file transfer.

' Chat with Host User - exchange messages with another computer.

' Invoke File Manager - transfer files or synchronize directories between the Host and the Viewer.

12. From the Link Menu, select Connect Using Phone Book. Select the number of the Host with which the Viewer is to connect. ReachOut will establish a connection and enter into the mode selected in step 11.

! The Host may require callbacks. Callbacks required for security are fixed; the Host calls back a prespecified number to connect to a specified Viewer. Callbacks used for other reasons, such as to reverse telephone charges, ask you to enter the telephone number. After ReachOut establishes the initial connection, the Host prompts for a return call number, if necessary, then disconnects and calls the Viewer. When the Viewer responds, the ReachOut session can begin.

13. Traverse between the various ReachOut modes as needed. Modes may be selected from the File menu of the Viewer menuing system. To return to the Viewer menus:

' While in the Remote Control (or Host PC) mode, press <ShiftLeft>+<ShiftRight>.

' While in Chat mode, close the Chat window.

' While in File Transfer mode, close the File Transfer window.

' While in the Viewer PC mode, type view. The Viewer will not attempt to re-establish the connection.

Instructions for using the ReachOut modes are outside of the scope of this document. Refer to the Stac Electronics ReachOut User's Guide for more information.

Disconnecting

When the remote session is complete, the connection must be terminated. To disconnect a ReachOut session:

1. Access the Viewer menuing system as described in step 13 of the connection establishment instructions.

2. From the Link menu, select Disconnect from Host PC (to reboot the Host computer, select the Disconnect and Reboot Host PC option).

3. Press any key other than <Esc> to verify the disconnection.

4. From the File menu, select Exit to Viewer PC.

! During the remote session, if the option to Exit to Viewer PC was executed and then the session returned to the Host PC, all of the drivers may not unload. In this event, reset the computer to reclaim all memory.
