A Windows based Viewer includes Viewers running in Windows 3.x and Windows 95 environments. There are two types of connections that may be established from a Windows based Viewer:
. Viewer in Windows controls a Host in Windows - The Viewer is taking control of a Host and running a Windows 3.x or Windows 95 application.
. Viewer in Windows 3.x controls a Host in DOS - The Viewer is taking control of a Host and running a DOS session. Note that a Windows 95 Viewer cannot take control of a DOS Host.
Before establishing a connection, do the following:
. Install the Viewer as described in Chapter 2 - Installation.
. Connect the modem to the COM port. Be sure to use the type of modem and the COM port specified during the installation.
. Connect the modem to the phone system.
. Verify that the Host is functioning and awaiting a call.
Help
At any time during the connection process, double-click the Help icon (or press <F1>) for help on the function being performed.
Use one of the methods below to pull down a ReachOut Viewer menu:
. Press the letter underlined in the menu name. For example, press L to access the Link menu.
. Using a mouse, select the desired menu option and click the left mouse button.
Item Selection
Use one of the methods below to select an item from a menu:
. Press the letter underlined in the menu name. For example, press V to select the Connect and View option from the Link menu.
. Use the up and down arrow keys to highlight the desired item. Press <Enter> to select the item.
. Use a mouse to position the cursor on the desired menu option and click the left mouse button.
1. A ReachOut program group was created during installation. Access this program group by double-clicking the ReachOut icon from the Program Manager. Then double-click the ReachOut Viewer icon.
2. Several buttons are displayed on the Viewer window as described below. Click on the button to perform the desired mode of communication. Or, from the Link menu, select the Connect Only option. This establishes a connection, but does not initiate a mode of communication. Once the connection is established, the user may use ReachOut's Drive Mapping or select one of the communication modes below.
ReachOut Viewer Buttons:
' Remote Control - control applications running on the Host from the Viewer.
' File Transfer - transfer files or synchronize directories between the Host and the Viewer.
' Chat - exchange messages with another computer.
' Terminal Emulator - allows a Viewer to connect to a computer running terminal emulator software other than the ReachOut Host. Terminal emulation is typically used to dial into a bulletin board system (BBS), a UNIX computer, an information service such as CompuServe and Delphi, data terminals, and other computers running terminal emulation software.
' Exit - closes the Viewer.
' Help - provides information about ReachOut.
! Once the connection is established, the user may switch between these different connection modes.
3. If the Terminal Emulator option was selected, the ReachOut Terminal Emulator window is now open. To establish a connection, click on the Dial button. The phone book will be opened.
4. If Remote Control, Chat, or File Transfer was selected, or if Connect Only was selected from the Link menu, the phone book will automatically be opened.
5. Click on the Add button to add an entry to the phone book.
6. Enter a Description of the Host.
7. Enter the Phone Number of the Host.
8. If the Host requires, enter a User Name (consult the system administrator to determine this information).
9. If the Host requires, enter a Password (consult the system administrator to determine this information).
10. To automatically invoke terminal emulation when this number is dialed, click on the Terminal Emulation option. A check mark appears to indicate that terminal emulation is enabled. Clicking on the Terminal Emulation option again disables terminal emulation. Refer to step 2 for more information on terminal emulation.
When the Terminal Emulation option is enabled, the Term Setup button is enabled. Click on this button to specify the communication parameters listed below. Note that these parameters may also be edited from the Comm menu on the ReachOut Terminal Emulator window.
' Baud Rate
' Data Bits
' Stop Bits
' Parity
' Flow Control
' Terminal Emulation Type
' Local Echo (Duplex)
' Line Feed after Carriage Return
' Language Translation
' File Transfer Protocol
' Auto Answer
' Script Filename
! Although the phone book includes the terminal emulation designation, ReachOut will automatically invoke the terminal emulator if the Viewer connects to a system that is not recognized as a ReachOut Host.
11. Click the OK button. The new entry is saved in the phone book.
12. Repeat steps 5 through 11 for each Host that the Viewer will need to dial into.
! Phone book entries may be modified using the Edit button. Entries may be deleted using the Delete button.
13. Click on the phone book entry representing the desired Host for this connection. Click the OK button. Click the Yes button to verify the changes to the phone book.
14. ReachOut will establish a connection and enter into the mode selected in step 2.
! The Host may require callbacks. Callbacks required for security are fixed; the Host calls back a prespecified number to connect to a specified Viewer. Callbacks used for other reasons, such as to reverse telephone charges, ask you to enter the telephone number. After ReachOut establishes the initial connection, the Host prompts for a return call number, if necessary, then disconnects and calls the Viewer. When the Viewer responds, the ReachOut session can begin.
15. Traverse between the various ReachOut modes as needed. Modes may be selected from the Viewer window (if a button is not available for the desired mode, pull down the Link menu). To return to the Viewer window:
' While in the Remote Control mode, choose the ReachOut Viewer from the control menu. The control menu is accessible by clicking on the button in the upper right corner of the window containing the Host session (this button resembles a square with a dash in the middle).
' While in the Remote Control mode, press <ShiftLeft>+<ShiftRight>.
' Double-click the ReachOut Viewer icon.
' Press <Ctrl>+<Esc> to display the task list of the local computer. Select ReachOut Viewer from the list.
Instructions for using the ReachOut modes are outside of the scope of this document. Refer to the Stac Electronics ReachOut User's Guide for more information.
While connected to the Host computer, it may be necessary to access the local computer. Several ways to transfer control are listed below.
. If possible, click anywhere outside the window containing the host session.
. Press <Ctrl>+<Esc>. This displays the local computer's task list. Choose the desired task.
When the remote session is complete, the connection must be terminated. To disconnect a ReachOut session:
1. Access the Viewer window as described in step 15 of the connection establishment instructions.
2. Click the Disconnect button. Or, from the Link menu, select Disconnect and Reboot Host PC to reboot the Host computer.
3. Click the OK button to verify the disconnection.
4. Click the Exit button to close the Viewer.
