Environments

The ReachOut Viewer software has two executable options: ReachOut for Windows and ReachOut for DOS. Both are provided on the same diskettes.

ReachOut for Windows should be installed if the Viewer will run in a Windows 3.x or Windows 95 environment. If the Viewer is running Windows 3.x, the Host may be running DOS, Windows, or Windows95. If the Viewer is running Windows 95, the Host may be running Windows or Windows 95.

ReachOut for DOS should be installed if the Viewer will run in a DOS environment. The Host may be running DOS or Windows 3.x.


Preinstallation Checklist

If a remote control software package other than a previous version of ReachOut is already installed on the computer, remove it. Before performing the Viewer installation, answer the following questions.

1. Who is the manufacturer of the modem to be used by the remote PC?

2. What is the model name of the modem?

3. To which COM port is the modem attached?


Windows Installation

These instructions apply to both Windows 3.x and Windows 95 environments.

Before proceeding with the installation steps below, complete the Preinstallation Checklist on Page 2 - 1.

1. If version 4.x or earlier of ReachOut is installed on this computer, ReachOut must be unloaded before running the installation application. If the Viewer is automatically loaded in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, it must be removed as described below.

' If Windows is running, exit Windows.

' Edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT file using a DOS text editor.

' Delete following line:

call c:/reachout/winldm.bat

' Exit the editor, saving the file.

' Reboot the computer.

2. Insert Disk 1 of the ReachOut diskettes into drive A:.

3. If Windows is not already running, invoke Windows 3.x or Windows 95. If running Windows 3.x, pull down the File Menu from the Program Manager. If running Windows 95, click the Start button.

4. Click the Run button. Enter the following in the dialog box:

a:/install

Click the OK button. The ReachOut SetupPilot installation utility will be invoked.

5. Respond to the Name, Company, and Serial Number prompts with the appropriate information. The serial number is located on the envelope in which the ReachOut diskettes were shipped. The Continue button is not available until the serial number is correctly entered. Use the mouse or the <Tab> key to move between fields. Click the Continue button when the information is correct.

6. A screen displaying the Name, Company, and Serial Number is displayed. If the data is correct, click the Yes button. Otherwise, click the No button and make the necessary changes to the information.

7. The next screen determines the type of installation and directory into which ReachOut will be installed. Click the box next to the Complete option. Then click the Continue button to perform a full installation into the c:/reachout directory.

! The amount of disk space required as well as the space available are displayed. Verify that sufficient space exists to complete the installation. If not, click the Exit button, correct the problem, and return to step 2.

8. The ReachOut files are copied onto the PC. Insert the ReachOut diskettes when requested, and click the Continue button to proceed with the installation.

9. A screen displaying the connection types is displayed. Remove the last ReachOut diskette from the A: drive. Store the diskettes in a safe place. Select the appropriate connection type, then click the Continue button to confirm the selection.

10. A dialog box requesting an optional user name is displayed. If desired, enter a unique name that ReachOut will use to identify the remote computer. No entry is required. Click the Continue button.

11. A list of communications ports is displayed. Use the arrow keys to select the port to which the modem is attached (refer to the preinstallation checklist on page 2 - 1). Click the Continue button.

12. A list of modems is displayed. Use the arrow keys to select the type of modem attached to the communications port (refer to the preinstallation checklist on page 2 - 1). If the desired modem type is not listed, or the modem type is not known, select the most appropriate Hayes compatible modem. Click the Continue button.

13. If an older version of ReachOut was previously installed on this computer, a window will be displayed explaining that the ReachOut group must be replaced. Click on Yes.

14. Installation is complete. If no other Windows applications are running, click Restart Windows. The current Windows session will be closed, and Windows will be restarted with a fully functional ReachOut Viewer. Otherwise, click Return to Windows, but remember that Windows must be closed and restarted before the Viewer will function.


DOS Installation

Before proceeding with the installation steps below, complete the Preinstallation Checklist on Page 2 - 1.

1. Insert Disk 1 of the ReachOut diskettes into drive A:.

2. Enter the following at the DOS prompt:

a:/installd

Press <Enter>. The ReachOut installation utility will be invoked.

! If a:/install is invoked from the DOS command line, and Windows is installed, the ReachOut installation utility will automatically invoke Windows and perform a Windows installation. To force an installation from DOS, use the command a:/installd.

3. Respond to the Name, Company, and Serial Number prompts with the appropriate information. The serial number is located on the envelope in which the ReachOut diskettes were shipped. The serial number must be correctly specified before the installation will proceed. Press <Enter> to complete each entry. Press the <F10> key when the information is correct.

4. A screen displaying the Name, Company, and Serial Number is displayed. If the data is correct, press <F10>. Otherwise, press any other key and make the necessary changes to the information.

5. The next screen displays A: as the drive from which the installation is being performed and C:/REACHOUT as the directory into which ReachOut will be installed. Press <F10> to continue.

6. Next the type of installation is requested. Press F for a Full installation.

7. The ReachOut files are copied onto the PC. Insert the ReachOut diskettes when requested, and press <Enter> to proceed with the installation.

8. A screen requesting an optional user name is displayed. Remove the last ReachOut diskette from the A: drive. Store the diskettes in a safe place. Then, if desired, enter a unique name that ReachOut will use to identify the remote computer. No entry is required. Press <Enter>.

9. A list of communications ports is displayed. Use the arrow keys to select the port to which the modem is attached (refer to the preinstallation checklist on page 2 - 1). Press <Enter>.

10. A list of modems is displayed. Use the arrow keys to select the type of modem attached to the communications port (refer to the preinstallation checklist on page 2 - 1). If the desired modem type is not listed, or the modem type is not known, select the most appropriate Hayes compatible modem. Press <Enter>.

11. A list of baud rates (or data speeds) is displayed. Use the arrow keys to select the desired rate (the default is recommended). Press <Enter>.

12. A screen explaining the phone dialing prefix is displayed. Read the instructions on the screen. Change the dialing prefix if necessary. Press <Enter>.

13. Installation is complete.
