About This Manual
ReachOut is a high performance remote control application for Windows 3.x, Windows 95, and DOS environments. Using ReachOut, a user may dial into a network from a PC at a remote location. The user can run applications and access data just as if the remote PC were directly connected to the network.
In this illustration, a user dialing in from the laptop "takes over" a PC in the Cubix System, which is connected to the LAN. Applications invoked by the user are actually run on the Cubix PC. All screen displays are directed over the telephone line and shown on the console of the laptop. All keyboard and mouse entries made on the laptop are directed via the phone line to the Cubix PC. In this manner, the remote user is able to access network resources, such as file servers and printers, just as if this same user were running from a workstation directly attached to the LAN.
To understand this Quick Start Guide, the following ReachOut terms must be defined:
Viewer - The ReachOut software installed on the remote PC (the home computer or lap top) that allows it to dial into the LAN. The Viewer receives the screen displays and transfers the keyboard and mouse input via the telephone line.
Host - The ReachOut software installed on the Cubix PC that allows the Viewer to dial in and connect to the LAN. The Host transfers the screen displays and receives the keyboard and mouse input from the Viewer via the telephone line.
Remote Control - An operation in which a remote computer dials into a host computer and takes control of the host. All screen displays are directed from the host via the phone line to the remote PC, and keyboard and mouse input are directed from the remote PC to the host.
Drive Mapping - A computer makes some or all of its drives available to the connected computer. Drives or directories on one computer are mapped to drive letters on the other.
Directory Synchronization - The process of updating the files in a directory on one computer with more recent files from a different computer. This may be used to bring files on the Viewer computer up to date by transferring the latest version of files from the Host computer, or to backup modified files on the Viewer computer to the Host computer.
The ReachOut Viewer features include:
. Fast remote control for running applications on the connected computer
. Speedy file transfer to move or copy files from one computer to the other
. Reliable remote drive mapping for data access from programs on the other computer
. Easy file synchronization to bring directories up to date with a single click
. Convenient remote printing to print at either connected computer
. Useful PC to PC chat for immediate communication with a connected user
. Robust terminal emulation
This Quick Start Guide provides instructions for installing and operating the ReachOut Viewer at a remote location. The purpose of this document is to guide a user through the Viewer installation and first dial in connection. Host installation and operation instructions are not included. Host instructions and more detailed Viewer information is included in the ReachOut User's Guide by Stac Electronics.
