Chapter 2
Installation

Installing Boards

With Cubix's passive backplane architecture, you can easily remove or install boards in the LCS Network Server Subsystem ( Figure 2-1).

The passive backplane has no active logic. The BC 4000 board controls the expansion slots and acts as a motherboard. The BC 4000 must reside in the EISA slot nearest the power supply. This slot has an additional connector to control the other EISA slots in a multi-bus-master environment.

EISA-slot technology is backward-compatible with ISA technology. This means you can install an ISA board in an EISA slot, but you cannot install an EISA board in an ISA slot.

Six of the EISA slots support EISA bus-mastering technology. This technology is used to increase the amount of data transferred across the EISA data bus. To install boards,

1. Turn off power to the Subsystem.

2. Unplug the power cord.

3. Pull out the Subsystem drawer until it locks in place.

4. Remove the top cover from the Subsystem.

NOTE Be sure you are grounded to avoid static discharge.

5. Remove screw and slot cover from the slot where you will install the board.

6. Install the board in the slot. Be sure to install the boards in the proper EISA or ISA slot (see Figure 2-2 and Figure 2-3).

7. Secure the board with the screw you removed from the blank filler panel.

8. To connect cables, refer to Chapter 3.

9. Configure the EISA boards. See Chapter 5.
