Introducing Your FaxModem
Your high-speed faxmodem conforms to the PCMCIA Type II standard for personal computer cards. You can use the faxmodem both as a send-and-receive fax device and as a data modem.
As a fax device, your faxmodem can send and receive fares at speeds up to 14,400 bits per second (bps). As a data modem, your FaxModem can communicate non-compressible data at speeds up to 2X,800 bps and compressible data at even higher speeds. The actual speed depends on several factors, including the highest speed supported by your software, the telephone line conditions, and the capabilities of the remote modem and computer.
Your faxmodem adjusts itself automatically to the remote system you are connecting to. This means you can communicate conveniently with fax machines, faxmodems, and data modems anywhere in the world.
Your PCMCIA faxmodem comes with everything you need to plug it into a standard modular telephone jack. In addition, the faxmodem has built-in circuitry that makes it cellular-ready; so that with a phone-specific upgrade kit you can communicate fares or data "wireless" by plugging a thin cord between your faxmodem and one of the many supported cellular phones. Your PCMCIA faxmodem also uses the MNP10 EC protocol, which enables higher data transfer rates over cellular connections.
Your PCMCIA faxmodem is also equipped with PC Card-Guard, a special feature that protects your PCMCIA faxmodem card from being damaged accidentally if you unknowingly connect the faxmodem card to a digital PBX-type phone jack. This feature uses special circuitry to sense excessive current and divert that current, thereby preventing damage to your PCMCIA faxmodem.
When used with fax and data communications software, your PCMCIA card handles virtually all communications operations, so you can send and receive fares and data without having to know the faxmodems commands. (If you are accustomed to using AT commands and S registers, you can use them with this faxmodem. Refer to the appendices for summaries.)
This manual is organized as follows:
Introduction (this section) lists what you need to use the faxmodem.
Chapter 1 explains how to install the faxmodem.
Chapter 2 provides tips for setting up and using your software and faxmodem.
Chapter 3 provides information to assist you if you have problems.
The appendices provide additional information on a number of topics including setting the internal faxmodems communications port and replacing the fuse in the external model, as well as tables that summarize AT and S registers.
Follow the instructions provided with your fax and data communications software to install the programs and to send and receive fares and data.
