Serial Port Connectors and Cables

The QL 4001 boards provide two standard PC/ATtype COM ports. These ports use Mini-DIN 9 female connectors. The following cables may be acquired from Cubix:

Parallel Port

The QL 4001 provides a standard parallel port (LPT1). The LPT1 port uses a DB-25 female connector.

Optional Monitor and Keyboard

The QL 4001 will optionally support a VGA monitor and PS/2 keyboard. This requires a Cubix printed circuit board (PCB) adapter and bracket, and a single panel opening where the DB-15 High Density and Mini-DIN 6 connectors can be installed. Both the monitor and the keyboard interfaces are provided on the same PCB adapter. A 14-pin flat ribbon cable is required to connect the monitor and keyboard adapter to the QL 4001.

INSTALLATION

Warning: Perform a proper shutdown and disconnect power from the system before beginning this procedure.

1. Install the Cubix PCB adapter in a panel opening on the system. Typically, an opening provided for an empty board space is dedicated to the monitor and keyboard connectors. In this case, install the bracket next to the QL 4001 board requiring the monitor/keyboard ports, and tighten the screw firmly.

Alternately, if the monitor and keyboard connectors are being installed into a Cubix auxiliary junction panel, the bracket provided with the monitor/keyboard adapter should be removed. Remove the bracket from the connectors and install the adapter into the desired opening.

2. Connect one end of the 14pin ribbon cable to the video/keyboard mux header on the QL 4001 board (refer to Figure 3-4). The pin-one side of the ribbon cable is marked with a colored (blue or red) stripe. Pin one on the QL 4001 is on the left side of the header when the edge connector is down. Align the pin-one side of the ribbon cable with pin one on the header.

3. Connect the opposite end of the 14-pin cable to the header on the Cubix adapter board. Pin one on the adapter is indicated in Figure 3-4. Align the pin-one side of the ribbon cable with pin one of the 14-pin header on the adapter board.

4. If a monitor is to be used, plug the monitor's cable into the DB-15 HD connector.

5. If a keyboard is to be used, plug the keyboard connector into the Mini-DIN 6.

Optional Mouse

A PS/2 mouse input port may optionally be added to the QL 4001. This requires a Cubix printed circuit board (PCB) adapter and bracket, and a single panel opening where the Mini-DIN 6 can be installed. The adapter actually houses two Mini-DIN 6 connectors, providing a mouse connector for two QL 4001 boards. Use of the second connector is optional. To connect the mouse port requires a 5-conductor cable.

INSTALLATION

Warning: Turn off the power to the system before beginning this procedure.

1. Install the Cubix PCB adapter in a panel opening on the system. Typically, an opening provided for an empty board space is dedicated to the mouse connectors. In this case, install the bracket next to the QL 4001 board(s) requiring a mouse port, and tighten the screw firmly.

Alternately, if the PCB is being installed into a Cubix auxiliary junction panel, the bracket provided with the mouse adapter should be removed. Remove the bracket from the adapter and install it into the desired opening.

2. Connect one end of the 5-conductor cable to the PS/2 mouse header on the QL 4001 board. Pin numbers one through five are indicated on the cable connector. Align pin one of the cable connector with pin one on the header.

3. Connect the opposite end of the 5-conductor cable to one of the 5-pin headers on the Cubix adapter board. Refer to Figure 3-5 to locate pin one on the adapter board. Align pin one of the cable connector with pin one on the header.

4. Plug the mouse connector into the Mini-DIN 6 opposite the header that is connected to the QL 4001.

* The mouse uses IRQ 12.

Optional Disk Drive

An IDE hard drive interface is included on the QL 4001 for applications that require a hard disk drive. IDE drives include an AT compatible disk controller. The IDE interface will support one or two IDE drives, connected via the internal 40-pin ribbon cable header (refer to Figure 3-6). The hard disk controller uses IRQ 14 for its interrupt.

Installing an IDE hard drive requires modifying the BIOS Setup. Refer to the BIOS Setup Chapter.
