QL 4001
Chapter 1 - Introduction
Introduction
Hardware Overview
The QL 4001 is a remote communications processor-based product which functions as a workstation on a Novell network. The QL 4001 must be installed in either a NetWare file server or an external bridge or router. NetWare versions 2.2, 3.11, 3.12, and 4.0 are currently supported.
Although the QL 4001 can function in a variety of application environments, it is typically used to host remote sessions. A modem is connected to the standard serial COM port on the QL 4001. Remote users can then dial into the network via the QL 4001.

The QL 4001 is a computer on a single AT-style plug-in board. The QL 4001 is equipped with a either a 80486DX2, 80486DX or 80486SX processor running at 66 MHz, 33 MHz, or 25 MHz respectively. The QL 4001 is ISA-bus compatible.
The QL 4001 provides most of the functionality of standard AT-class computers. It includes VGA support, two serial ports, one parallel port, a disk interface, and up to 16MB of RAM.

Since the QL 4001 products are installed as remote communication host processors, the ability to directly connect a monitor and keyboard to the board is not usually required. However, to provide for times when the network administrator wishes to connect a monitor and keyboard to a QL workstation, Cubix supplies an adapter for this purpose (refer to Chapter 3). In addition, the QLVision software utility allows the screen and keyboard I/O to be redirected to another workstation on the LAN (refer to the QL 4000 Series Guide to Operations).
The QL 4001 boards may function as diskless workstations, or the IDE interface for connection to a hard disk drive may be utilized for applications that require local drive support.
The QL 4001 has been uniquely engineered and designed for remote communication integration on a Novell NetWare network. Cost effectiveness has been achieved through the elimination of standard AT-class computer hardware which is not required in a remote communication environment, while AT compatibility has been maintained. The QL 4001 provides an ideal solution at a low cost for processor-intensive applications.
