Serial Port Connectors

The QL 3000 Series boards provide two standard PC/ATtype COM ports. The QL 3001 COM ports use DB-9 male connectors. The following sections provide cabling information for these ports.

QL 3001 COM1 and COM2 (DB-9)

This is the same configuration as a standard PC/AT DB-9 COM port.

Figure 3-1.

DB-9 (COM Port) to DB-25 Modem Cable

This cable connects modems or communication devices to the DB-9 COM ports on the QL 3001 boards. This is the standard PC/AT COM port cable.

For detailed information on the available communications configurations for these products, see the QL 3000 Series Guide to Operations.

Cables

Modem Cables

The modem cable from the QL 3001 DB-9 to the modem is a standard PC to modem cable (available from Cubix or most computer stores).

Terminal Cables

Some communication software packages allow terminals to be connected to the QL 3001 DB-9. The cable diagrams should be provided in the communication software manual.

Other Cables

The communication software documentation provides other cable configurations and information on modem setup strings which may be helpful in configuring the system.

Optional Parallel Port

A parallel port may optionally be added to function as LPT1 of the QL 3001. One parallel port may be installed per processor. Each port requires a Cubix LPT1 printed circuit board (PCB) adapter and bracket, a panel opening where the DB-25 connector can be installed, and a 20conductor ribbon cable.

Installation WARNING: Perform a proper shutdown and disconnect power from the system before beginning this procedure.1.

1. Install the Cubix LPT1 adapter in a panel opening in the system. Typically, an opening provided for an empty board space is dedicated to the LPT1 connector. In this case, install the bracket next to the QL 3001 board requiring the LPT1 port and tighten the screw firmly.

Alternatively, if the LPT1 connector is being installed into a Cubix auxiliary junction panel, the bracket provided with the LPT1 adapter should be removed. Unscrew the connector from the bracket and install the adapter into the desired panel opening.

2. Connect one end of the 20-conductor ribbon cable to the LPT1 header on the QL 3001 board. The pin-one side of the ribbon cable is marked with a colored stripe. Pin one on the QL 3001 is labeled with a triangular arrowhead (Ú). Align the pin-one side of the ribbon cable with pin one on the header.

3. Connect the other end of the ribbon cable to the LPT1 adapter. Pin one on the adapter is labeled with a triangular arrowhead. Align the pin-one side of the ribbon cable with pin one on the adaptor.

4. Plug the peripheral device's cable into the DB25 connector.
