Introduction

The QL 3001 is a remote communications processor-based product which functions as a diskless workstation on a Novell network. The QL 3001 must be installed in either a NetWare file server or an external bridge or router. NetWare versions 2.15C, 2.2, and 3.11 are currently supported.

Although the QL 3001 can function in a variety of application environments, it is typically used to host remote sessions. A modem is connected to the standard serial COM port on the QL 3001. Remote users can then dial into the network via the QL 3001.

Hardware Overview

The QL 3001 is a computer on a single AT-style plug-in board. The standard QL 3001 is equipped with a 80386SX processor. The QL 3001CX uses the higher performance Cyrix Cx486SLC. Both models of the QL 3001 are ISA-bus compatible.

The QL 3001 and the QL 3001CX provide most of the functionality of standard AT-class computers. They include VGA support, two serial ports, one parallel port, and up to 16MB of RAM. The standard QL 3001 is compatible with the 80387SX math coprocessor, and the QL 3001CX is compatible with the Cyrix Cx83S87. Figure 1-2

Since the QL 3001 products are installed as remote communication host processors, the ability to directly connect a monitor and keyboard to the board is not provided. However, Cubix does provide the QLVision software utility which allows the screen and keyboard I/O to be redirected to another workstation on the LAN (refer to the QL 3000 Series Guide to Operations).

The QL 3001 boards function as diskless workstations. All of the files necessary to boot and run a QL 3001 workstation reside on a NetWare file server. Therefore, there is no disk controller interface on the boards.

Both the standard QL 3001 and the QL 3001CX have been uniquely engineered and designed for remote communication integration on a Novell NetWare network. Cost effectiveness has been achieved through the elimination of standard AT-class computer hardware which is not required in a remote communication environment, while AT compatibility has been maintained. Expanded support for the Cyrix Cx486SLC provides additional performance at a low cost for processor-intensive applications.

Optional Features

In addition to the optional math co-processor support, both the standard QL 3001 and the QL 3001CX are compatible with the Cubix Line Busy Module. The purpose of the Line Busy Module is to make the telephone line appear busy when the QL processor or modem is not ready to answer an incoming telephone call.
